Committee News

From the Professionalism and Ethics Committee:

Even when the insurer offers its policy limits, claimants often wish to verify the lack of other sources of recovery before agreeing to give a release. This may involve inquiries about such things as other insurance, whether the insured was acting in the course of some employment or agency, and/or other assets that might be subject to execution. We are now American College of Coverage Counsel

On August 28, 2018, the American College of Coverage and Extracontractual Counsel announced a name change; the College will be known as the American College of Coverage Counsel. The name change more succinctly reflects the association’s purpose. "Our mission remains the same: to advance the creative, ethical, and efficient adjudication of insurance coverage and extracontractual disputes,” said Mary McCutcheon, president of the American College of Coverage Counsel. “We will continue our focus on educating all sectors involved in the field of insurance law – including the judiciary, legal and insurance professionals, law students and businesses.”

Law School Practical Skills Writing Competition on an Insurance Law Problem

In order to expand on the College’s goal of engaging law students in the area of insurance law, hoping that today’s law students will be interested in becoming the insurance lawyers of tomorrow, the College is pleased to announce this practical skills writing competition. In addition to receiving cash prizes, the top three students will be invited to attend the College’s Annual Meeting in Chicago on May 9-10, 2019, with all expenses paid. This will present a wonderful opportunity for these students to meet and network with some of the top insurance lawyers in the United States. Indeed, last year’s competition winners were third-year students who are now practicing at excellent coverage firms around the country. One of them received the offer from her now-employer after she informed them that she won this award!
